        1.  Anton Gbur1, born December 06, 1843 in Pottlitz, Kreis Flatow, West Prussia, Kingdom of Prussia2,3; died August 31, 1918 in Sigel, Wood Co., WI4.  He was the son of 2. Jan Ignatz Gbur and 3. Eva Weyland.  He married (1) Marianna Jagodzinski November 20, 1870 in St. Stanislaus  Church, Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., WI.  She was born November 04, 1852 in Hungerwerder, Kreis Wirsitz, Posen, Kingdom of Prussia5, and died 1885 in Sigel, Wood Co., WI.  She was the daughter of Wojciech (Adalbert) Jagodzinski and Rozalia (Rosalie) Waloch.  He married (2) Martha Budzinski February 22, 1886 in Sigel, Wood Co., WI6.  She was born Abt. 1866 in Europe7, and died Unknown in America.  She was the daughter of Stephan Budzinski and Mary.

 

Notes for Anton Gbur:

Born in Potulice (Pottlitz), West Prussia on 10 December 1843, baptized on 17 December 1843 at

Zakrzewo.

 

     "Anton Gbur, 25 yrs. old, a bricklayer from Prussia", left Europe from Bremen, Germany on the steamship "America" under Master Georg Ernst, arriving in New York on 18 June 1869 (Filby's "Germans to America" Vol. 23).  This time frame is verified by 1900 census information.  The age of 25 yrs. also matches the birth date of 1843 given on his death record. He was the only passenger named Gbur (var. spellings were also checked) aboard the ship, or in this time frame.  The original ship's manifest lists him as passenger 250 and as

not having a cabin.

     Anton arrived in Milwaukee, WI prior to November 1870, where he married Marianna Jagodzinski.

Witnesses at the wedding were Antonius Olszowni and Josephs Müdlew.  In 1879 Anton and family were living at 639 Grove Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The family continued to reside at this address until at least June of 1882 when their son John was born*.  By May 1884 Anton was living at Sigel, Wood Co., Wisconsin.  On his marriage record from 1886, Anton names his parents as John Gbur and Eva Valenta.  The church record for Anton's marriage to Martha Budzinski (misspelled as Dudzinska) notes that Anton is the widower of Marianna Jagodzinski.  This record also records Anton's place of birth as "Potulice Borusia".  Potulice is the Polish spelling of "Pottlitz", a city located in Kreis (County) Flatow in the Province of West Prussia.  Kreis Flatow was later part of Pomerania, and is presently "Zlotow" in Poland.

      At some point in time (after 1885) Anton changed the spelling of the family name from "Gbur" to Gabur".

 

*The 1881 Holy Rosary parish map shows that A. Gbur owned land southeast of Vesper at that time.

 

Notes from Henry Zaeger, an 84 year old former farmer from Sigel Township who owned land near the

Gabur place and knew Anton (Sr) and his children.  Lives at 620 17th Avenue South in Wisconsin Rapids.

He was mainly a friend of Frank Gabur, son of Anton, and knew the other kids as well (Sophie, Alex, Theodore and Rosy).  Recalled the dances and parties at the Gabur place.  Old "Grandpa Gabur" with his beard and long johns.  Believes the old farmhouse is intact, but remodeled.  Was a pallbearer at Anton's funeral, held at Holy Rosary church, Sigel, with burial in the church cemetery.  Possibly no headstone.

His wife believes the death was within two years of their (the Zaeger's) marriage .

Grand Rapids (Wisconsin) Daily Leader, Tuesday 3 September 1918

 

Anton Gadur (sic) died at his home in Sigel on Saturday afternoon at 3:00.  Funeral to be held at 8:30 Wednesday from the home and at 9:00 from the Polish Catholic Church in Sigel with Rev. Ciszewski officiating.  Interment in Sigel Cemetery.  He was born December 6, 1843 and was 74 years, 8 months and 25 days old.  A resident of Sigel for a number of years, he leaves a wife and a number of grown children. Note:  There is a marriage recorded in Portage County, Wisconsin on 23 April 1888 for Anthony Gabur and Frances Solarik.  This Anthony Gabur is probably not related to our line, he was born in Szosnarowa, Poland, the son of John Gabur and Anna Banas.  There were several Gbur, Gebur, Gäber and Gaber families in Chicago and Milwaukee in the late 1880's, they originated in Poland, Germany, Austria, Lithuania and Austria.

Notes for Marianna Jagodzinski:

Baptized at Hungerwerder, Kreis Wirsitz, Posen, Kingdom of Prussia on 5 November 1852.  Sponsors at baptism were uncle Franciscus (latinized form of Franciszek) and Marianna Walloch.  In

the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Sigel, WI there are graves for Franciszek Walloch and Marianna Walloch (1828-1918).

     Marianna was the first wife of Anton Gabur.  She arrived in America on 8 May 1869 aboard the "SS Berlin" with her mother and several siblings.  The Berlin sailed from Bremen to Hamburg.  According to the 1880 Federal Census for Wisconsin, Milwaukee Co., Marianna was 25 years old, which would mean she was born 1854 or 1855.  The census lists her place of birth as Poland.  The birth record for John Gebur, Milwaukee County Vol. 29, shows Marianna's name as Mary Jogodzinska* of West Prussia.  The address for this birth was 639 Grove St., the residence of Anton Gbur (Milw. City directory 1879).  Marianna's brother John Jagodzinski was a witness at Anton Gabur's (Sr) marriage to Martha Budzinski in 1886.  The name Jagodzinska also appears as the mother of Helene Gbur on Helene's marriage record in 1905.

 

 

* In many east european countries a feminin suffix was added to surnames.  Jagodzinska is the feminin

form of Jagodzinski.  This practice was usually discontinued when people immigrated to America.

        2.  Jan Ignatz Gbur, born December 27, 1801 in Pottlitz, Kreis Flatow, West Prussia, Kingdom of Prussia; died July 15, 1866 in New Potulice, Prussia.  He was the son of 4. Szymon Gbur and 5. Anna Mir.  He married 3. Eva Weyland February 12, 1833 in Buczek Wielke (Gross Butzig) West Prussia.

        3.  Eva Weyland, born Abt. 1809 in Czyszkowo, Kreis Flatow, West Prussia, Kingdom of Prussia; died December 12, 1853 in Pottlitz, Kreis Flatow, West Prussia, Kingdom of Prussia.

 

Notes for Jan Ignatz Gbur:

The date of birth was given by Lauri Kramer Serafin.

 

Church records for Flatow use the "Latin" spelling of Jannes, Joannes, Johannesand Johann for Jan.

On vital records for his children the name is usually shown as John.

 

Joannes Ignatius Gbur was baptized at Potulice on 3 January 1802. Godparents were Jacob Wyrwalski and Marianna Baran or Baron of Potulice.

 

Jan Gbur and Eva Weylandt are listed in the parish register of Buczek Wielki (Gross Butzig).  They married there on 12 February 1833, Jan was 25 and Eva was 24.   Their parents names were not mentioned.   Witnesses at the wedding were Adalbert Lupa and Carola Olzewski.

 

Eva died 12 December 1853.  Jan married a woman named Marianna Gospodarz, whose maiden name had been Szopervaj (the spelling of the last name is unclear).

 

The entries below are for people of similar names, listed only for the purpose of showing that the Gbur name was not uncommon at the time.

 

Many of the Gbur's found in Chicago descend from the family of John Gbur (born May 1882 in Austria/Poland) and his wife Mary Basnik (born April 1879 in Galicia, Austria).

 

The Gbur's from LaSalle, IL descend from Franz and Katherine Gbur, also from Flatow.  Franz is  the son of Stanislaus and Magdalena Gbur. Stanislaus was also from Pottlitz and is either a brother or cousin to Jan.  Stanislaus and his family moved from Pottlitz to Prochy about 1862.

 

The 1900 census for Chicago shows John Gaber, born in Poland/Austria, arrived in America in February

of that year.

 

The 1900 census for La Salle, IL lists John Gbur (born September 1860 in Poland/Germany) with

his wife Sophie and children Mary, Frank, John, Stanley, Annie, Michael and Teofil.  John Gbur arrived

in America in 1884.

 

The 1920 Chicago census also lists a John and Mary Gbur from Austria with children Edward, Michael,

Alice, John and Joseph.

 

Notes for Eva Weyland:

Name also appears as Weiland, Weylandt, Walenty and Valenta.  Eva is from Czyszkowo and is possibly the daughter of Jakub Weiland.  This is supported by the fact that her first son had the middle name Jakub.

Notes for Andrzej Gbur:

Andrzej was baptized at Zakrzewo on 19 November 1837.  Godparents were Stephan Moerka

and Hedwig Mir.  Birth records for his children give his name as Andreas Gbur.  Anrzej and family arrived in America on 7 June 1873 aboard the ship "Norma", having sailed from Bremen, Germany to Baltimore under Master George Norvenholdt.  He is erroneously listed in "Germans to America" as Adalbert Bur, but the names and ages of his wife and four children who accompanied him verify the record.  He is shown in the Milwaukee city directories as Andrew Gebur from 1878 to 1880, residing at 679 Windlake Avenue.

     Sometime between 1880 and 1884 he left Milwaukee for Douglas county, Minnesota, where he became an American citizen on 4 May 1885.  Court records show that his declaration of intent was previously filed in Milwaukee.  Several months later 160 acres of land for a  homestead was granted  to Andreas Gbur in Leaf Mountain Township, in the neighboring Otter Tail county, Minnesota.  This is the same person.

  Andrzej's children left Minnesota for California in the early 1900's and several of his children stayed in Minnesota.  His son's Joe and Simon remained farmers in Minnesota.

Anton and Marianna arrived in Baltimore on 24 Mar 1873, having set sail from Bremen, Germany on the "Leipzig".  They settled in Milwaukee, WI and later relocated at Wauwatosa, WI.
