Descendants of Anton Gbur
Generation No. 1
1. ANTON3 GBUR (JAN IGNATZ2, SZYMON1)1 was born December 06, 1843 in Pottlitz, Kreis Flatow,
West Prussia, Kingdom of Prussia2,3, and died August 31, 1918
in Sigel, Wood Co., WI4.
He married (1) MARIANNA JAGODZINSKI November 20, 1870 in St. Stanislaus Church, Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co., WI,
daughter of WOJCIECH JAGODZINSKI and ROZALIA WALOCH. She was born
November 04, 1852 in Hungerwerder, Kreis Wirsitz, Posen, Kingdom of Prussia5,
and died 1885 in Sigel, Wood Co., WI.
He married (2) MARTHA BUDZINSKI February 22, 1886 in Sigel, Wood Co., WI6,
daughter of STEPHAN BUDZINSKI and MARY. She was born
Abt. 1866 in Europe7, and died Unknown in America.
Notes for ANTON GBUR:
Born in Potulice
(Pottlitz), West Prussia on 10 December 1843, baptized on 17 December 1843 at
Zakrzewo.
"Anton Gbur, 25 yrs. old, a
bricklayer from Prussia", left Europe from Bremen, Germany on the
steamship "America" under Master Georg Ernst, arriving in New York on
18 June 1869 (Filby's "Germans to America" Vol. 23). This time frame is verified by 1900 census
information. The age of 25 yrs. also
matches the birth date of 1843 given on his death record. He was the only
passenger named Gbur (var. spellings were also checked) aboard the ship, or in
this time frame. The original ship's
manifest lists him as passenger 250 and as
not having a cabin.
Anton arrived in Milwaukee, WI prior to
November 1870, where he married Marianna Jagodzinski.
Witnesses at the
wedding were Antonius Olszowni and Josephs Müdlew. In 1879 Anton and family were living at 639 Grove Street,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The family
continued to reside at this address until at least June of 1882 when their son
John was born*. By May 1884 Anton was
living at Sigel, Wood Co., Wisconsin.
On his marriage record from 1886, Anton names his parents as John Gbur
and Eva Valenta. The church record for
Anton's marriage to Martha Budzinski (misspelled as Dudzinska) notes that Anton
is the widower of Marianna Jagodzinski.
This record also records Anton's place of birth as "Potulice
Borusia". Potulice is the Polish
spelling of "Pottlitz", a city located in Kreis (County) Flatow in
the Province of West Prussia. Kreis
Flatow was later part of Pomerania, and is presently "Zlotow" in
Poland.
At some point in time (after 1885) Anton
changed the spelling of the family name from "Gbur" to Gabur".
*The 1881 Holy Rosary
parish map shows that A. Gbur owned land southeast of Vesper at that time.
Notes from Henry
Zaeger, an 84 year old former farmer from Sigel Township who owned land near
the
Gabur place and knew
Anton (Sr) and his children. Lives at
620 17th Avenue South in Wisconsin Rapids.
He was mainly a friend
of Frank Gabur, son of Anton, and knew the other kids as well (Sophie, Alex,
Theodore and Rosy). Recalled the dances
and parties at the Gabur place. Old
"Grandpa Gabur" with his beard and long johns. Believes the old farmhouse is intact, but
remodeled. Was a pallbearer at Anton's
funeral, held at Holy Rosary church, Sigel, with burial in the church
cemetery. Possibly no headstone.
His wife believes the
death was within two years of their (the Zaeger's) marriage .

Note: There is a marriage recorded in Portage
County, Wisconsin on 23 April 1888 for Anthony Gabur and Frances Solarik. This Anthony Gabur is probably not related
to our line, he was born in Szosnarowa, Poland, the son of John Gabur and Anna
Banas. There were several Gbur, Gebur,
Gäber and Gaber families in Chicago and Milwaukee in the late 1880's, they
originated in Poland, Germany, Austria, Lithuania and Austria.
More About ANTON GBUR:
Immigration: June 18,
1869, Arrived in New York aboard the "America"
Notes for MARIANNA JAGODZINSKI:
Baptized at
Hungerwerder, Kreis Wirsitz, Posen, Kingdom of Prussia on 5 November 1852. Sponsors at baptism were uncle Franciscus
(latinized form of Franciszek) and Marianna Walloch. In
the Holy Rosary
Cemetery in Sigel, WI there are graves for Franciszek Walloch and Marianna
Walloch (1828-1918).
Marianna was the first wife of Anton
Gabur. She arrived in America on 8 May
1869 aboard the "SS Berlin" with her mother and several siblings. The Berlin sailed from Bremen to
Hamburg. According to the 1880 Federal
Census for Wisconsin, Milwaukee Co., Marianna was 25 years old, which would
mean she was born 1854 or 1855. The
census lists her place of birth as Poland.
The birth record for John Gebur, Milwaukee County Vol. 29, shows Marianna's
name as Mary Jogodzinska* of West Prussia.
The address for this birth was 639 Grove St., the residence of Anton
Gbur (Milw. City directory 1879).
Marianna's brother John Jagodzinski was a witness at Anton Gabur's (Sr)
marriage to Martha Budzinski in 1886.
The name Jagodzinska also appears as the mother of Helene Gbur on
Helene's marriage record in 1905.
* In many east
european countries a feminin suffix was added to surnames. Jagodzinska is the feminin
form of
Jagodzinski. This practice was usually
discontinued when people immigrated to America.
Notes for MARTHA BUDZINSKI:
Arrived in America
1885. She was the second wife of Anton
Gabur (Sr.). In the 1900 census she
says she was the
mother of seven children, four of them living.
The other three children, apparently
no longer living, may
have been from a previous marriage in Poland. Martha definately brought several
children from her prior marriage into her marriage with Anton Gabur. These children may have been
Clara (died 1891 in
Sigel) and Frank (died 1895 in Sigel).
In the 1910 census for Sigel, Wood Co.,
Wisconsin she is shown as being 44 years old, 22 years younger than Anton. This would put her birth in 1865 of 1866. This census shows Martha as the mother of 11
children, 6 living. The 1900 census
says she was born in Poland/Germany in 1867.
Children of ANTON GBUR and MARIANNA JAGODZINSKI are:

was baptized 2 July 1882 at St. Stanislaus church in Milwaukee. His godparents were Jan Kempa and Justina.
There was a John Gbur

"Lena" Married at the Grand
Rapids Roman Catholic Church. Felix was
living there at the time and working at Sigel.
The exact spelling of his last name is unclear. Although one reference shows that Helene and
Felix lived at 125 W. Mineral Street in Milwaukee. She was not listed as being a living survivor when her brother
Edward died in Chicago in 1925.

Notes for ROSALIA GABUR:
In 1918 (at the time of
her father's death) Rose Conway lived in Minneapolis at 609 9th St. South.
The 1930 City Directory
show a Rose B. Conway, telephone operator, living at 3432 17th Ave. South.
This is probably not
the same Rose Conway, as Rose was not listed as living in 1925 when her Brother
Edward's estate was probated. The name
Rosalie is from the Holy Rosary Church records, the name appears in other references
as Rose, Rosa and Rosie.

Notes for EDWARD GABUR:
Edward Gabur died in
Norwood Park township, Cook County, IL on 20 November 1925 at the age of
18. His body was brought back to Wood
County and his estate was probated there.
Probate records show the town of Sigel as his legal residence at the
time of death. Edward's brother Alex
was the administator
of his estate, which consisted of the
property "North-West Quarter of the North-East Quarter of Section No. 29
in Township No. 23 North of Range No. Five East, Wood County,
Wisconsin." The only surviving
siblings at this time were Alex Gabur, Sophie Chapman and Frank Gabur.
Generation No. 2
2. ANTON WILHELM4 GABUR (ANTON3 GBUR, JAN IGNATZ2, SZYMON1) was born April 10, 1879 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Co.,
WI23, and died December 02, 1923 in Nekoosa, Wood Co., WI24,25. He married MARTHA WAYERSKI Abt. 1899
in Wisconsin26, daughter of JOHN WAYERSKI and MARY WOJEWODKA. She was born March 06, 1885 in Junction
City, Portage Co., WI27,28, and died August 27, 1970 in Port
Edwards, Wood Co., WI29,30,31.
Notes for ANTON WILHELM GABUR:
According to the
records at St. Stanislaus Church, Anton Gwilhelm Gbur was born in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin on 10 April 1879 and baptized there on the 13th. The godparents at his baptism were his
maternal grandmother, Rozalie (Waloch) Jagodzinski and Walenty Daszkowski. He was later called Anton Wilhelm Gbur, so
he apparently altered the original spelling of "Gwilhelm". His family came to Sigel, Wisconsin (Wood
Co.) prior to his father's second marriage in 1886. In 1900 Anton was living
in Nekoosa, Wisconsin
with his wife Martha. By this time he
was spelling his name "Gabur" instead of "Gbur". Their eldest child, Frank Edward Gabur, was
born in Ashland, Wisconsin in 1901.
Several children were then born in Shanagolden, Wisconsin (Ashland Co.)
where Anton worked at a lumber yard.
Anton died in Nekoosa on 2 December 1923 and was buried December 5th in
the Sacred Heart Cemetery
there (Section
C-3). His death record shows his age at
death as 44 years, 7 months and 26 days.
This varies slightly with the recorded day of April 10th.

which are at home. Funeral services
will be held Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at the Catholic Church, the Rev.
Joseph Feldman officiating. Interment
will be made at the Riverside cemetery. (Provided by Joan C. Bille, Madison,

Notes for MARTHA WAYERSKI:
Martha was the first
child of John Wayerski to be born in the United States. In Martha's obituary,
her mother was not
mentioned by name, but she would have been Mary Wojewodka, the first wife of
John Wayerski.
John Wayerski is shown in the 1885 and
1895 census for Carson Township, but again, his wife is
not mentioned by
name. On Martha's death record her
mother is listed as "Mary Ann Woods". The informant for this information was Martha's third husband,
William Wilke. On Martha's marriage
record for her 2nd marriage (John Wirth) her mother again appears as
"Mariae Woods". In a family
tree chart
by Robert Gaber, the
name "Mary Woods" again appears as the mother of Martha
Wayerski. John Wayerski was indeed
married and had children before he left Poland (or Germany) for America. Mary's
maiden name is shown
as "Wojewodka" by her son Frank at the time of his marriage. The name Wojewodka was apparently
"Americanized" to Woods by the family at some time. The obituary for Constance Wayerski also
gives very conclusive evidence that Helen Wayerski (Mrs. Leo Borski) is
the only child born to
her with John Wayerski.
According to the 1900 census for the Town
of Nekoosa, Wood Co., Wisconsin, Anton Gabur (21) and Martha Gabur (15) were
married one year at the time of the census.
The marriage record is not on file in Wood County.
Between the births of sons Raymond and
Leonard Martha had a stillborn daughter.
At this time she was suffering from smallpox.
In the 1930 Nekoosa City Directory,
Martha and husband John Wirth are listed as residing on Simmet
Street with son
Raymond Gaber.

Information from
Social Security account application for Frank Joseph Gabur
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------
Name: Frank Joseph Gaber
Address: 521 No. (--) St., Fort Atkinson, WI
Employer: Virgan Marten, 522 Adam St., Fort
Atkinson, WI
Date of birth: 16 March 1897, Sigel, Wood Co., WI
Father: Antony Gaber
Mother: Martha Stublaski
On the application
Frank gave his date of birth as 16 March 1897.
The Social Security Death Index
(Family Tree Maker
CR-Rom #110) lists his date of birth as 16 March 1895. Frank used the "Gaber" spelling of
the name at this time. His mother
should be listed as Martha Budzinski.
The name Stublaski appears to be an error by Frank. His brother Alexander listed their mother as
Martha Polaski.
Frank was listed as 4
years old in the 1900 census, 10 in the 1905 census and 15 in the 1910 census.
Until further proof is
found I will go with the year of birth as 1895, which is also the year on
record with the Social Security Administration.
There is a grave for
Frank Gbur (died 1895) in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Sigel, WI. There is a possibility a first child named
Frank was born and died in 1895, the next son born was then also given the name
Frank or Francis. Records from the Holy
Rosary Church can probably clarify this.

Birth was registered
delayed, on 30 January 1942. He was
baptized on 14 May 1924 at St. Michael's

He had two daughters but no sons, so the name "Gabur" probably
died out with the passing of Alexander.
